The Kafala System in Lebanon has always been one of the primary factors in the underlying enforcement of human rights violations and the perpetuation of abuse and contemporary slavery in Lebanon. Summarising, the Kafala System is a migration sponsorship system that allows Lebanese citizens to legally bind themselves to their recruited migrant domestic workers (MWDs). The Kafala system is an unjust system that holds in its grip upwards of 250,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon 1, rendering them powerless to defend themselves against their employer and reducing their state to the extremes of a modern form of slavery. Migrant domestic workers in Lebanon are trapped in a web woven by the kafala system, an inherently abusive migration sponsorship system, which increases their risk of suffering labour exploitation, forced labour and trafficking and leaves them with little prospect of obtaining redress. We can all do something to stop the devastating impact of kafala on the lives of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers in Lebanon. And we can all work towards one day abolishing this oppressive system completely. Here's a list to get you started.
